I know how to build a pc, but I don't know how to build my own custom case.
I'd love to be able to make my own pc case for a truly custom build.

Where do I start?

1. Design. Have a vision in your mind.
2. Material. Wood, steel, alu, plastic, other
3. Positioning of the motherboard and the IO ports.
4. ATX specs and screw locations - http://www.formfactors.org/developer%5Cspecs%5Catx2_2.PDF

An easy way to start is to obtain a cheap ATX case, and dismantle it. Free, or maybe $20 for a new one.
Get out the Dremel and have at it.

I watched the Linus tech tips video where he builds a under desk pc.
He marks the motherboard screw holes, drills the holes behind the mobo, then screws in what I can only describe as a motherboard pre-standoff. Any idea what they are actually called?

I believe that would just be 'standoffs'.
You can buy a box of about 100 PC related screws and standoffs from Amazon for about $10.

EDIT: Ahh...I think you might be referring to threaded inserts. Something to screw the actual standoffs into.

Assuming you are in the US:

Take one of the standoffs to your local Lowes, Home Depot, or other hardware store.

You will be able to find nuts that would screw onto that standoff.
Exactly what you might need depends a LOT on how you are building this.

For instance...if a wooden tray:
Drill out a recess to fit the nut you found above.
Strong glue, and glue that nut into the recess.
When secure, screw the standoff into that nut.

Adjust for however you are actually building this.

I'm thinking about doing a wood build. So I can have my pc smell of rich mahogany. I usually go full ATX, but I might change it up in order to create the look into want. I'm probably not going to go with just a plain rectangular case. I want to keep it unique.
