Hey,

I currently have 300€ and I can buy a used i7 4770K (225€) + Maximus VI Hero (€95€) both €320 or a used i7 3960X + Rampage IV Formula set for €350

I was wondering which was the best for me, I recently sold my Xeon 1270v3 because it was bottlenecking my gtx 970 for some reason, so I don't really think the Haswell set is a huge upgrade from my 1270v3 which also was socket 1150. I already have Corsair Vengeance 2x8gb ddr3 1600mhz so Skylake isn't really an option for me because that will be way too expensive for my budget. I will be using my PC for gaming, videoediting, rendering, music and some other stuff.

Thanks.

The Core i7 4770K would be the same thing as the CPU you had before except you could overclock it a little bit. You certainly had a problem with your previous PC and it wasn't the CPU that was at fault. The Xeon 1270V3 can easily handle a GTX 970. Who knows what your issue really was? But I'll tell you right now the Core i7 3960X is going to be slower at gaming than a Haswell chip. That's a Sandy Bridge part. Even the Ivy Bridge 3770 is faster than the 3960X at gaming. Go with the Core i7 4770K if you're gaming. Really even for video editing the 4770K isn't a whole lot slower than the 3960X. I'd say overall the 4770K is better.
For the things you want to do the i7 3960X will be the better option. :)

Video-editing and rendering will be faster with the i7 3960X and its still perfect for gaming, games starting to use more cores like battlefield 1 for example.

But keep in mind that the new amd cpus are coming out aswell, which will probably have a good price.

The 3960X would probably be the better option, as it has more cores, and overclocks way better than the 4770K, which will rule out the IPC difference between the CPU's. If you don't overclock, I'd go with the 4770K instead and save some bucks.

Yep I'll go for the 3960x and save up for a good AIO watercooler :)
I got the hyper 212 evo right now, do you think I'll be good on stock speeds till I get a good watercooler?
Thanks :)
