I've had been using my Western Digital My Book 3TB for almost 2 years now. I try at best to routinely check the health of the the drive and haven't seen any problems. About a week ago I began to notice it started taking a long time to mount the drive (longest time was almost 2 minutes).

I would plug the drive in the USB port as usual, I can hear the drive working (spinning, not clicking thankfully). I have opened the Device Manager > Disk Drives, I can see the name, it shows in Properties it is operating normally but now it takes so long to the point where I no longer hear the spinning but the front light still blinks.

I use this on my Sony Vaio laptop, Windows 7.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there n3ro,

Is the drive under warranty? Is there some important information stored over there?

If the drive gets accessible, even though it takes really long, you will need to back up the data stored on it ASAP.
Then, you can see if attaching the drive with a different cable to another computer would make any difference.

If the drive is not accessible, even after using a different cables as well as system, you can see if it would be accessible under Ubuntu. You will need to boot from a CD or a flash drive, navigate to the HDD and back up the data if accessible: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode

If you manage to back up your data, you can test the drive with WD's DLG tool (both short and extended tests): http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=GvFjQ1

Let me know how this goes,
D_Know_WD :)

I probably also forgot to mention that while I was in Disk Management it showed "Disk 1 - Unknown - 2794.52 GB - Not Initialized" Next panel "2794.52 GB - Unallocated." Could this be a partition issue?

Prepping right now to do some tests. Hopefully I'll be able to let you know soon what I find.

Took a while but finally got the final results. A test was ran on the disk. In the beginning the drive was recognized in BIOS, at least some good news at first. Second, I began to attempt some data recovery. End result was not being able to recover (just 4MB).

Now I'm really worried.
