If I'm installing windows 10 home on an unactivated windows 10 education system do I need to format the boot drive? I read online that the windows installation will automatically format the drive but I want to be sure before I do anything. Also, how should I backup my boot drive files? Can I just drag the drives' folders into my hdd or do I need to go more in depth?

To be honest I am not sure how Windows 10 Home will "respond" to an install attempt over Windows 10 Education. I would think, hopefully, that as long as there are no licensing conflicts from the viewpoint of Windows 10 Home then all should be well.

However, I prefer to do a clean install to a new drive or at least a newly formatted drive.

As for your files you should be able to drag and drop (move) them to another drive. Again I prefer to copy folders and files. That allows me to verify that the copies are good. And, if not, try a re-copy. Once sucessfully copied then I simply disconnect that drive so it cannot be inadvertently affected by the new install. [Make two sets of copies in different locations if at all possible.]
