im currently mainly for gaming

I cant decide whether to get the gtx 1060(6gb) or rx 480(8gb)

The gtx 1060 can perform well with dx11 but performs bad with dx12.The rx 480 performs well with dx12 but performs bad with dx11.

Also ive read that nvidia abandon its cards overtime or when new cards are released when some are saying otherwise. While amd continues to update there cards. If im getting the rx 480 then i will go with win 10 because of dx12 and if gtx 1060 win 7(i think)

Gigabyte ga h97m d3h(already have)
Antec earthwatts 650w 80+bronze(already have)
Seagate 1tb hard drive(already have)
Intel i5 4590 3.3ghz(already have)
Kingston hyperx fury blue 1600 16gb(2x8gb)

Today, Nvidia, tomorrow, AMD.

Nvidia posts great FPS with DX 11 titles. AMD RX480 posts very good numbers in the few DX12 titles that exist. Often edging out the GTX1060.

If you upgrade infrequently, I would vote for the RX480. If you upgrade every other year or so, the GTX1060 won't let you down for a while.

Also depends on your future monitor plans. If you are sticking with 1920x1080 or going for QHD. (Though then you want to look at the 1070, or wait on the 'RX490'

what games do you play the most?

after seeing so many of these threads, and looking over a lot of different benchmarks. i think my new answer is going to depend on the games you play. for me personally, the only demanding games i play (league of legends can probably be run on a toaster) are battefield 4, world of warcraft and overwatch which i believe all heavily favor nvidia.

I'm not going to answer this question directly, but take issue with this statement. In my experience, Nvidia supports it's hardware far longer than AMD. I can still download functional drivers for an ancient NVidia 7300 GT (release date 2008/2009), but AMD has abandoned anything older than GCN 1.0/Radeon 7700 (release date 2012). I don't like this about AMD, but given their financial situation I don't think they can afford extended support for older hardware.

Support is another matter entirely. I was referring to the software updates provided during the relevant lifespan of a GPU.

And Nvidia definitely has a drop off point where they stop caring. They promised DX12 support for Fermi, in writing, and then did not deliver. They make no mention of it at all. And while you can download drivers for their older cards, it isn't always the latest version.

There is only so much money they can pour into aging hardware. When the GPU no longer meets the hardware standards of the day it may be impossible to provide drivers for contemporary OS or graphics APIs.

While it does appear that AMD doesn't support Pre-8000 series, though they dip into the higher end of the 7000 series, for Windows 10, they do offer their 2012 drivers for Windows 7 for much older hardware.

Nvidia is playing a similar game. Pascal's latest drivers require Windows 10 Anniversary edition as a pre-req.

As for which brand to buy. Sapphire has been pretty well regarded. XFX and ASUS would also be decent choices. I've not really had or dealt with any other AMD brands.

I've repaired a Sapphire or two, and I recently sold off my ASUS 6670 (Took AMD too long to make a card with HDMI 2.0)
