Can't install Nvidia drivers, GPU won't show up on device manager?

Hi, I have a Dell laptop that was gifted to me, the previous owner barely used it since she couldn't get used to it, as a result the drivers were never updated(or anything for that matter).
I updated every driver, uninstalled the Intel Drivers and re-installed it and tried to install the Nvidia drivers on Dell's site, it said "This graphics driver could not find compatible hardware".
At that point I had windows 8, I updated the BIOS, restored it to default and the gpu was showing up on device manager (hidden). I tried to change de .inf files but that was useless since it already had my ID (or whatever that is) on there.

So, I now have Windows 8,1 and the GPU doesn't show up on the Device Manager anymore and I still have the same error. I can't open the Nvidia control panel too and there is nothing on my BIOS related to gpu. I'm starting to think that there's a problem with the hardware itself, which would mean that it probably was always like that since I'm pretty sure that a 60 year old woman would not bother messing with it...

Anyone have any suggestions?

SPECS:
Dell Inspiron 3421
Intel Core i5-3337U
Intel HD Graphics 4000
should have a GeForce GT 625M 1GB
6GB Ram
Windows 8.1 64 bit
BIOS: A13
Feel free to ask if you need more information
Thanks for the help.

P.S: Sorry if I made some grammar/spelling mistakes, english is not my first language, but hopefully you could understand. If not, feel free to ask me.

I can't find the 14 2640 listed on the UK Dell site although there are references to it on Google to a Portugese tech. site. The only thing I can suggest is to either roll back to your previous OS (windows 7?) or try to re-install windows 8.1 and see if the adaptor is detected.

You say it 'should' have a GT625M.....are you certain? Which model of Dell laptop is it? If the GPU was installed in the system then device manager would show it listed under display adaptors with the Microsoft Basic Display Adaptor associated with it.

Yeah, the 2640 and the 3421 are the same. My previous OS was windows 8, had the same problem but it showed up on device manager. Guess I'll reinstall it and see if it works. Thanks for your help.
