Current Setup:
MY PC: Acer Predator G3-605 Desktop PC
GPU: GeForce GTX 645
CPU: Intel®Core™ i5-4440 CPU @ 3.10GHz
Memory: 8.00 GB RAM (7.91 GB usable)
Current resolution: 1920 x 1080, 60Hz
Maximum Power Supply Wattage: 500 W

I am split between getting a 1050ti or a 1060 but I have no clue if I could handle either of them? Any advise on whether I would be fine purchasing either of these now and upgrading?

Solution
i5-4440 = 84W TDP
1060 3GB = 120W TDP
= 204W TDP + 50W For Turboboost, Storage and RAM maybe more.

I have seen system builder use a 350W PSU for i5 6th Gen and 1060.
As long as the PSU is a known brand then it'll be just fine but to be honest your PC isn't exactly gonna blow up cos its an unknown PSU, and all the speculation around unknown PSU's is amazing but unless you're overclocking should work just fine.

Does it cost a lot to upgrade your psu, and is it something I could do myself easily?

Ty, also is it better to get the non-reference design from the nvidia website or get one of the many designs from Amazon? Is there a big difference in the ones manufactured by other companies, say different requirements?

I'd recommend the MSI Afterburner 1060 6GB or Gigabyte G1 both have LED's if you want a fancy look.
Non-Reference cards have generally better air coolers compared to reference/founders cards which use a blower style cooling system. Get a Gigabyte G1 they have good cooling and RGB LED's if i'm not wrong.
