For my Dell inspiron 17r special edition 7720 I wanted to do a fresh install of windows 10 on a samsung evo 850 msata SSD and wipe the old HDD drive. After installing the ssd and removing the hdd I installed windows on the ssd with a usb drive. Now the thing is that windows won't boot from the SSD and doesn't even show it in the boot menu. However when I put the HDD back and it booted up normally it showed me the ssd to be there. I already updated the bios and made the ssd an active drive with diskpart, both had no effect.
Any ideas how to make windows boot from the SSD?

Solution
OS on Disk 0 is installed in UEFI mode. Disk 0 is your HDD, right?
If there is OS no Disk 1 (your msata SSD, right?), and you installed OS without HDD connected, then it is installed in legacy mode (not UEFI).

You have 2 options:
1. Reinstall one more time, but in UEFI mode (clean your SSD before doing that and set partition format to GPT).
2. But if legacy mode is ok, then you can do without reinstallation. You just have to make bootloader partition active (that is partition F: ). G: partition, which you made active, doesn't contain bootloader, therefore you can't boot from it.

Ignore the mess of disk 0, that was one of the reasons why I wanted to put the OS on the SSD and wipe the HDD.

The second option did not work but after reinstalling in UEFI mode the laptop booted correctly, thank you very much!
