We are setting up a file server for a technical project. Large numbers of jpegs will be added to the server throughout the day (about 400GB a day). We have 12 virtual machines (on 3 VM hosts HP DL580 G5s) reading the jpegs , running edits, and saving the edited files. At the moment this is all running off one hard disk (actually 2 disks running in RAID 1) on a DL180 G6 server which is struggling. The first few files seem to be accessed fine but then reading/writing seems to slow right down. What would be the best setup to remove any bottlenecks in the data storage/access.
My budget is quite limited so I had the idea of purchasing an oldish HP storageworks 2700 with 25x 10K SAS 146GB drives.
My questions are
1) Would the 25 drives working together greatly reduce any delays in accessing the data?
2) Is there a better solution to my data issue
3) Would 15K SAS drives (obviously more expensive) make a significant difference to the 10K drives or is budget better spent elsewhere.
Many thanks
James
