Have 3x4gb, should I buy another 1x4gb or 2x4gb.

I have an older build I'd like to max out.
Currently I have a set of Patriot Sector 7 1333,3x4gb. It's running on an AMD board which can't utilize the triple channel capabilities this memory was made for (It was cheaper at the time to buy this 12gb set than most 8gb sets for some reason) also a cooler upgrade later on blocked one of the memory slots.

Question is, should I drop one of the 3x4gb sticks and put in a new set of 2x4gb that will support dual channel? So have 2 Patriot 4gb sticks, and 2 of some other brand? Or just add a decent 1x4gb stick? Do motherboards typically require both slot pairs to be identical to run in dual channel at all? Will 2 slots run in dual channel and 2 slots run in single channel.
If I have 2x4gb and a different set of 2x4gb will both run in dual channel? With the 3 sticks I have now are 2 slots running in dual and one single?

Thanks for any input.

Solution
1. If all the RAM didn't come in the same package there i no guarantee that it will work.

2. RAM should always be installed appropriately

a) Dual channel - in multiples of 2
b) Triple channel - in multiples of 3
c) Quad channel - in multiples of 4

3. When **trying** to mix RAM from different sets, the more things that are "the same", the better your chances of making it work,... make, model, series, version, speed, timings, module manufacturer, etc.
