hi everyone, just want to know what everyone thinks of the amd sapphire nitro radeon r9 fury 4gb video card. how powerful is it and how does it compare to the NVidia gtx 970. I can get a great deal on the fury and the gtx 970, that's why I'm asking.

Before you go and buy the 970 remember that AMD cards perform better with DX12/Vulcan compared to Maxwell cards. also the benchmark linked to by BadAsAI has the Fury X, which is a different card.

Another thing to concider is that the AMD card uses HBM ram, compared to the GDDR5 on the 970.

Also, here are some benchmarks:
GPUBoss: http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-FURY-vs-GeForce-GTX-970
This one is a bit dodgy as it only has synthetic benchmarks, though it is not completly useless.

User Benchmarks: http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-970-vs-AMD-R9-Fury/2577vs3509
Again mostly synthetic benchmarks, but gives you an idea as to how the cards differ.

TechPowerUp: https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Sapphire/R9_Fury_Tri-X_OC/18.html
This one got games on it, but it is from August 2015. The driver have become a LOT better, meaning that the performance of the card is better now than in the benchmarks. This holds true for the 970 as well, and it is present in the benchmarks as well so you can see the difference of the two cards.

I will note that I personally have a Fury(Sapphire Tri-X version) so I might be a bit bias in my judgement of the case. both cards are good, but I stand with the red team on this one.

AfterLifer makes some good points and the GPUBoss comparison seems to be closer than what I found. Look at the bottom of the page for some other interesting comparison.
The AMD wins overall in that comparison but the GTX is quieter and uses a lot less power. I run a 250W card in my rig so I clearly am not concerned with power consumption but it may factor in for you.

So what prices are you looking at for each card?

Here is a video about GDDR5 vs HBM memory by techQuickie:

If you want a TL;DR, (as far as I know) it has lower clock speed, higher capacity and can be placed on the GPU directly instead of around it making it faster.

In regards to noise I have not had any issues with the Fury, but I have never owned a 970 so I cant say which one makes less noise. Power should not be an issue for you (I got 850W too) though the Fury does use more.

More over, it is worth mentioning that the Maxwell and Pascal cards overclock very well, while the Fury to all intents and purposes cant overclock at all. You might be able to get 20MHz out of the Fury, and there will be no gains from doing so. Personally I would go with the Fury (not surprising considering I have one) mostly due to DX12.

If you look at this benchmark by PCWorld the Fury is well ahead on DX12(though it is still beaten by the 1070):
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3095301/components-graphics/3dmark-time-spy-tested-we-pit-radeon-vs-geforce-in-this-major-new-dx12-benchmark.html
Again we have a synthetic benchmark, mostly due to the low number of DX12 games. This will increase with time, making the card last longer.

I would not do the step by step upgrade from 970 to 1070. It is going to be a lot more expensive, and there are probably going to be better cards on the market by the time upgrading would be a good idea. If you have the spare cash to get the 1070 then go for it. It is an awesome card with a lot of performance and overclocking potential. If not, I would(again) advice going for the Fury. With better DX12 and Vulcan performance compared to the 970, it will last longer before it becomes outdated. It also helps that AMD got FreeSync monitors, which act in more or less the same way as G-Sync(Ive heard arguments from both sides as to which is better) but FreeSync is a lot cheaper.

Also, I would not personally go for the Hydro. Nothing wrong with the card, but the pump makes the card a lot louder. I also prefer fans because there are less stuff to go wrong, but again, personal preference.
