Hi guys,

a while back i replaced my PSU, CPU, GPU, MoBo, Ram, and added some fans to my computer.

The upgrades were well worth it, however, because i swapped MoBos my computer doesnt think my windows 8 serial number belongs to me. This is frustrating because once every couple of hours it blue screens me....i'm not too hard core so ive been just dealing with it for the last year or so.

Its time i fixed this. apparently my only option is buying a key code for a new windows program and registering it to my computer.

before i do this i would like to make some changes to my hardware. Currently running a seagate barracuda 7200rpm 1tb HDD. Its like 4 years old. It has plenty of space left on it but I plan on replacing this anyway with a higher quality HDD. something quieter, preferably, suggestions?

Also, i'd like to add a smaller SSD (~250gb) and use both an SSD and a HDD. I know a ton of people do this but i could really use some advice on how to do this with my own rig.

What is the order of operations? what SSD/HDD should i be using? should i install my OS on the SSD and my steam account + other games on my HDD? can i run some games on the SSD (like skyrim) and some from the HDD?

im really a noob and tomshardware has been my lifeline with my first PC! thanks for any and all help offered. let me know if u need to know anything about my current set-up to be helpful.

I would put the OS/Steam Client and maybe a game or two with longer loading screens on the SSD, then the rest of your games on the HDD (you can create another folder when downloading to the HDD). For a SSD I would recommend the Crucial MX300 275gb SSD.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Storage: Crucial MX300 275GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($85.59 @ B&H)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit ($88.58 @ OutletPC)
Total: $174.17
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

For storage, on the most basic level, the benefit of an SSD over an HDD is that it's much faster to write and read to an SSD. Knowing that should go towards helping you understand where it's beneficial to have items on the SSD. Writing would encompass things like installing things and saving files. Reading is where most people care and that pretty much covers loading in general.

So people install their OS on a SSD so that the OS will load faster. Games installed on a SSD will load faster as well but it's unlikely to affect actual gameplay too much, where the data speed is more from memory.

For an SSD suggestion, I like the Crucial drives as well. Samsung has higher raw performance specs but the Crucial MX300 has more data protection capcbilities.

For an HDD, the Barracuda is ok but at 4 years, it's getting a bit old. You could just get a newer Barracuda. The 2TB is pretty widely used currently for being a good balance of cost and quality. Alternatively, a WD Black is another good choice but I think it's louder than the Barracuda and more expensive. It's maybe slightly faster and has a 5-year warranty instead of the Barracuda's 2-year.

thanks guys.

so if i install only my OS + SteamOS on the SSD, but all of my steam games on my HDD how does that work? like ill load the steam client from the SSD and even though the games are installed on the HDD it will just talk to each other and load it from there?
