Hi,

Here is the build:

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/PFpN2R

My question is about this motherboard Asus ROG Maximus IX Hero and Samsung 500GB 960 Evo PCIe Solid State Drive. Whenever I add M.2 (M) SSD, PCPartPicker reports there is "Flag compatibility notes as incorrect" between those two. I have no idea what it means.

I read specifications for the motherboard and it says it supports both interfaces for M.2 S3 (M): SATA and PCIe. The M.2 SSD drive is of M.2 (M) form factor with interface M.2 (2280) PCIe 3.0 x4. Probably I am missing something but truly I don't know what it is. I am still quite a newbie at those things.

Please could you advice. Thanks.

Solution
You've probably already gone through with your purchase by now, but I'm about to upgrade to almost the exact same thing. From the ASUS website:

*2 When the M.2_1 Socket 3 is operating in SATA mode, SATA port 1 will be disabled.
*3 When the M.2_2 Socket 3 is operating in PCIEX4 mode, SATA port 5. 6 will be disabled.

M.2_1 is the slot right above the GPU.
M.2_2 is the slot at the bottom of the board.

You are fine. The incompatibility it is seeing is more a warning and is shown at the bottom:
– The motherboard M.2 slot #0 shares bandwidth with a SATA 6.0 Gb/s port. When the M.2 slot is populated, one SATA 6Gb/s port is disabled.

This means that one of the standard SATA ports will be disabled when you install an M.2 drive in the #0 M.2 slot. So only 5 onboard SATA ports will be active on that motherboard when you have the M.2 drive installed. This would be the case anyway if you used an SSD with a SATA interface.

Hey guys and thanks for answers. I am still a little bit confused.

M.2 SSDs come with two interfaces if I am not mistaken, that is PCIe and SATA. Does the warning information refer only if the drive uses SATA? It looks like the Samsung M.2 SSD drive uses PCIe interface. Does it still mean I would lose one of SATA ports if I decide to use this drive?

Thanks!

...like most MoBo's, there is a port doubling that they do to save "lanes" with the total SATA connections.

So, like most, if you use an M.2 SSD, you cannot mount a regular HDD/SSD on one of the other SATA ports in the MoBo. The manual states which are linked.

I thought of this too. And wasn't able to come up with an answer. I also am not sure which one of the m.2 slots will become #0 when you put a drive in there. Let us know if you are able to test this and figure it out.
