Yes, 6th gen motherboards with 7th gen processors are compatible.

Unless the board is absolutely brand new, than it will require a BIOS update.

brand new as off the manufacturing line since late Nov,2016. Not when you bought it.

Also, MSI withdrew official support on all their boards for Kaby chips despite them being in the supported CPU list. If you check under specifications they aren't mentioning 7th gen CPU's. It'll work, but there may be some bugs is my thinking.

I wouldn't worry those articles are over 3 months old and a new BIOS update has been released since then.

So If I bought a cheap Skylake G3900 celeron to do the upgrade and swap it out, that should be fine and work?

Gigabyte are flashing BIOS for free as part of the warranty now, so MSI may do the same. You'd have to send the board off but it may save you some money because that's an expensive BIOS update otherwise.

Cheers everyone finally got all the pieces and had time to put together, it was a pain as the display decided to not work and then magically worked after waiting 30 minutes, upgraded the bios with the g3900 and working fine now as soon as graphics card turns up my build it done.
