Why does the PSU need to be plugged in when building a PC?

So I am planning to get a new case for my PC and need to remove all the parts from the old one but apparently you have to like put the psu on before you start building which i dont understand?? Like why?? Someone please explain and what will happen if i dont do that

It doesn't. Whoever told you that needs to be smacked upside the head with a hummingbird feather. They are 100% wrong.

They may think that helps with grounding. The person is supposed to touch something metal before building or maintaining an existing PC. Having it plugged in will not protect the RAM modules from an ESD(electrostatic discharge). Wear a wool onesie and rub your feet across your carpeted floor all the way up to a door. Touch the door handle. Little...
