Problems when switching my settings to 144hz (Monitor)

Today I got my AOC G2770PF monitor. The monitor tags well along with AMD graphics card, since it is a freesync monitor. The only problem I have, is that I cant set my monitor refresh rate to 144 hz. I tried at first with HDMI, found out it does not work with a HDMI, then I tried with my old DVI-D (Single link). It was possible to set refresh rate to both 120hz and 144hz, but when I did there was a snowstorm-like pattern over my whole screen, so I had to turn it back down to 60hz again.

My question is: How do I get a clean 144hz refresh rate? Should I go for the DVI-D (Dual link) cable, or the DVI-D to HDMI cable? What would you recommend?

Follow up questions:
1.Could it be that my graphics card cant run at 144hz? I built my computer in 2012, and the graphics card is still the same ( AMD Sapphire Radeon 6800 HD ish). It was a good budget card back then.

2. Is AMD freesync overrated or should I try to test it out ? ( Considering I might buy a new graphics card in the near future and Im not sure if its gonna be an AMD one)

(^FYI the games I play are League of Legends and World of Warcraft. I have heard that once you play at 144hz you can never go back to 60hz, it is like night and day, so I am really hoping for a helpful answer:)! )

Thank you for the reply! Just out of curiousity, if it does not work with a dvi-d cable (dual link), should I assume it is my gpu that cant keep up? I feel abit left in the dark when it comes to monitor settings and so in overrall, but I really want to enjoy that 144hz gameplay.

It should work, but if it doesn't it's probably a problem in the windows setttings, or AMD settting, or game settings. But if you have any problem, post another thread, and/or DM me. :)

With correct cables you'll get 144hz, just a matter of pushing enough FPS to take advantage of it. Your current card won't push that many frames in anything but old games, though you'll probably get 100+ in WoW and LoL.

Freesync is pretty nice, if you like AMD there's no reason not to buy one in the future.

Ok, I got my DVI-D (Dual Link) cable up and running, but the problem persists. I still get a snowstorm on my screen when I attempt to turn up Hz to anything above 60Hz. I am lost here, please help. Tried to study the AMD Catalyst Center but nothing seems to help me out.

So correct cables are the dual link DVI ones? I know my card is not up to date, but what do you mean with 100+ ? FPS or 100+ hz? Currently I am running LoL in high graphics with FPS at 200+ uncapped. The same problem persists as before even though I got the right cables.

It is also worth noting that when I went ingame on LoL yesterday my screen also turned into a snowstorm. Turning the game into "Borderless mode" instead of full screen fixed the problem, but I dont know if this is relevant to the same thing happening when I set performance to 144hz in windows without having anything running
