Hi all - this is my first time posting and also first time trying to build a gaming computer from scratch, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

My motivation is to finally ditch my Acer laptop in favour of a proper desktop that can play modern games at 60FPS or higher at 1080p and on ultra high/high graphics settings. Games that I'm talking about currently include Total War: Warhammer, Fallout 4, Skyrim, Assassins Creed series, Ark.

As per the sticky thread on how to post these;

Approximate purchase date - within next two weeks
Budget range - £800-£930
System usage - gaming, web surfing, watching films, excel
Monitor - no (already have one)
OS - Yes, Windows 10 required
Websites favoured - Overclockers UK/Amazon
Location - London, UK
Overclocking - No/Maybe
Crossfire - No

Parts -

1) CPU - Intel® Core™ i5-6600K Processor
(6M Cache, up to 3.90 GHz)

2) MOBO - ASUS PRIME B250-PLUS LGA1151 DDR4 HDMI DVI VGA M.2 B250 ATX Motherboard with USB 3.1

3) GPU - NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB

4) RAM - Corsair CMK8GX4M2B3000C15 Vengeance LPX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 3000Mhz CL15 XMP 2.0 High Performance Desktop Memory

5) PSU - EVGA 600 BQ, 80+ BRONZE 600W, Semi Modular, FDB Fan, 3 Year Warranty, Power Supply 110-BQ-0600-K1

6) HD - WD Blue 1TB Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch

7) SSD - ADATA Premier SP550 240GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Superior Read & Write up to560MB/s & 510MB/s Solid State Drive (ASP550SS3-240GM-C)

8) Case - Corsair CC-9011051-WW Carbide Series SPEC-02 Windowed Mid-Tower ATX Gaming Case - Black with Red LED Fan

9) OS - Windows 10

I guess the main questions I'd really appreciate answers to are;

1) Is this a good first time build for gaming per my motivations (above)?
2) Will this all be compatible with each other?
3) Are there any of the components above that could be switched out to make it more within budget without compromising the systems ability to run modern games smoothly on ultra settings?
4) Are there any parts above that you think need to be switched to something different as they are not up to scratch?

I'm genuinely completely new to this so any advice would be really warmly received! And any criticism will be taken constructively too! The only parts that I'm quite set on are the GPU listed above, the OS and the HD. All the rest I'm totally open to suggestion.

Thanks in advance!

Pete

You can change the RX 480 to a GTX 1060 6GB and you'll still be fine with the same build. It's up to you, I still recommend the RX 480 because It's the best performer in DX12+VULKAN and those API's seem to be the big future.

You do have to add Windows costs to the build. Alternatively you can download Windows 10, install it and activate it later.

core i5 6600k does not come with a stock cooler and you need one for the same.
Get cooler master hyper hyper 212x or cryorig h7. h7 would be better in comparsion.
If you could spend some more bucks on mobo then asus z170 pro gaming is highly recommended. So, get z170 instead of B250.
If you are gaming then i would recommend to get 16 gigs of ram for games like BF1.

Thanks for the reply! So the 6600k needs a cooler or is that optional? Just trying to keep the cost down a bit as this is already top end of my price range.

And would you say the 6600k is significantly better for what I'm after than the 6600?

Hi, thanks for taking the time to reply!

2 quick questions;

1) Are there any driving reasons behind these picks? Would they be more efficient?
2) If I were to keep it all the same but use the i5 6600k instead would that still be compatible?

Thanks!

The i5-6600k isn't going to bring any benefit to the table, because you're not pairing it with a Z170/Z270 motherboard. You pay extra for the 6600k because you can overclock it, yet you need the right motherboard for it aswell. Out of the box the i5-7500 is faster and includes a CPU cooler, It's also a lot cheaper.

The build I listed just puts focus on good value for money. The 275GB SSD is sweet for the price, The H270M offers extra PCIE lanes and is packed with nice features, pretty good case for the price.

Although I'd probably suggest an XFX RX 480 GTR instead of a GTX 1060. It's one of the highest end RX 480 models and only costs 240 quid in the UK.

All the "K" version processors does not come with any stock cooler because they are meant to overclock and overclocking needs better coolers. Stock coolers are garbage, anybody would throw their stock coolers that is why intel doesn't provide the "k" processors with a cooler. So, you have to get one.

Get z170/z270 motherboard to pair it up with 6600k.
and i totally recommend getting a rx 480 8gb over gtx 1060 as rcf said.
6600k all the way anytime over 6600.

Stock coolers are perfectly fine for their intended purpose.

you could say that and it also depends on the country you live in, stock coolers in hot countries like india in summers are no good.

Thanks for the quick response! So the 6600k isn't better than the 7500 if you have no intention of overclocking then?

And in terms of the build you've listed -
1) Is it all compatible?
2) Would it fit in a mid-tier case (like the one I originally posted)?
3) Would it run all modern games on ultra/high graphics at a good FPS?

Sorry for asking so many questions but I'm rather new to this and want to make sure I buy something that can play the games I want really well, and be decent for at least a year or two!

Thanks!

Ofcourse It's all compatible and it'll run most games at high/ultra. Do you need a new monitor? If so, look into one with adaptive sync technology (FreeSync or G-Sync). FreeSync is much more affordable but only works with AMD GPU's. The RX 480 is on the 1060's level, so do take that into account.

If you're willing to go mid-tower I'll highly suggest the Phanteks P400S over the Corsair SPEC-02. I'll also select a good motherboard accordingly. The selected case has dust filters, great cable management, plenty of space for improving air flow with case fans, a fan controller and decent build quality aswell.

Thanks again!

No, monitor-wise I think I'm ok, and have a keyboard/mouse combo too. With the GPU I do appreciate what you're saying vis-a-vis the RX 480, but if I wanted to stick with the GTX 1060 would that still work with this new MOBO and case?

Also did the total price at the end there include Windows or would I have to pay for that additionally to the £895?

Thanks!
