USB Flash Drive becomes read-only when plugged in

I've had this flash drive for a few months but I haven't used it very often. A few days ago when I plugged it in my PC it said it was RAW format and didn't want to show the contents unless I formatted it. So I tried but every time it kept showing 'Windows was unable to complete the format'. I looked it up on Google and found out that it could be write-protected, so I opened diskpart and removed the read-only attribute. After that it worked flawlessly, it could read and write files without any problems. However, after I disconnected it and connected it again the same exact thing happened. I think this only occurs when you disconnect it directly from the USB port without clicking on 'Safely remove' first but I can't be sure because this behaviour isn't consistent. It's really frustrating, though, and I was wondering if anyone knows a solution. Is there a way to forbid it from going in this state? Thank you in advance!

I don't think so. You could try reformatting it with a formatting tool (which is usually offered by the device's manufacturer), but that's again, kind of a long shot.

It really sounds like the flash drive might be faulty and I'd advise you to try and get it replaced.

Cheers!
Hey there, klmn123.

Try it with a different computer as well, to see if the same thing happens again. If it doesn't you could try reinstalling your motherboard associated drivers - USB controller driver, chipset, etc. to see if that changes anything. If it does happen again, it could mean that you might have gotten a faulty flash drive. If this turns out to be the case (which is quite possible considering its behaviour), I'd suggest that you get in touch with the manufacturer or the vendor you got it from and RMA it.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how it goes.

Hey, Boogieman_WD!

Thanks for your answer. I've tried it with a few other PCs as well and the same thing happens. It's a generic no-brand stick so I didn't expect much from it anyway but it would be great if it didn't do that. Is there no way to prevent it from going in a read-only state by itself?
