Hi,

Today I upgraded my GPU to the GTX 1060. Being a very long time since my last upgrade, I forgot to check how many PCI-E pins this card requires.

Now I've an issue because the card wants an 8 pin connector and my PSU which is OCZ600MXSP only has 6 pin connectors. Should I go ahead and just plug in the 6 pin? Should I get a new PSU? Should I use an 6>8 adapter?

Advice appreciated!

There is no existency for 8 pin on the PSUs , Cause many other cards requiere 6 or any other different convinations... So the less pins the better thats what PSU manufacturers said.
TO PLUG THIS CARD you need to get a 6 pin along with a 2 pin connector that should be in the same cable that 6 pin connector is... OR 2 4 pin connectors...

it may look similar to this:

Strange... In the product it says it DOES have a 6+2 (8 pin) cable.

PCI-E 6+2-Pin Cable 483mm / 19 inches x1

Check in the PSU box if there is no additional cables you have forgotten to plug.

then im pretty sorry for you to tell you this but... or you find a way to purchase the cable separetly (that is quite rare to find) but possible cause the cable is Modular so you can just plug it like its an additional cable and done. OR you replace the PSU with a new branded.
There is no other SAFETY solution... and i wont personally try the unsafe ones...

Ground is just the return, it still carries current, if you connect a lightbulb to a battery, one end of the cable is 0V and one end would be 1.5V, but they both have current flowing through them, therefore missing out one of the ground wires is not that smart.

I didnt say just plug the 6 pin into the card, i said he can use an adapter. Like a 6 to 8 pin adapter it just loops the 2 ground wires into another of the other 3 ground in the 6 pin.

So that'll have 3x the current flowing though one of cables.

Don't get me wrong it's not as bad with this generation as say with the 500 to 700 series, but it's not great.

so little fyi for you

for a 6 pin connector
pin 1,2,3 are +12v with some manufacturer not using pin 2 at all.
pin 4 & 6 are ground and pin 5 sense A

For a 8 pin
pin 1,2,3 are used for +12v
pin 4 Sense B and Pin 6 for Sense A
pin 5,7,8 used for ground

Pin 4 & 8 are your +2 on a 6 +2 one wire is a sense wire and the other is a ground. So yes you can take both wires and feed them into another wire off the 6 pin or a lot of manufacturer will hook the two sense pins together and then two grounds together.

On my new Evga G2 1600w all the wires are 16awg with the two extra pins being 18awg and daisy chained off 2 other grounds.
