I am currently doing checking updates on the pc
But it seams to be takeing a long time this pc has never check for updates.

How long should it take to check for updates if the pc has never took check update before? As this is a new pc custom build.

More about long checking updates
  1. Ive had a computer take 24 hours to find updates from a fresh install, where i just rebuilt an older computer i had made a few years back and took 10 min to find all its updates.
  2. The Windows Update client has, itself, been updated. When you do a fresh install you've got the old version which never anticipated having to keep track of thousands of updates. You can let it chug along and hopefully finish, sometimes it does but sometimes it gets stuck. Or you can manually update just the WU client. Then when you run the updated client it usually finishes in an hour or two depending on your net connection speed.

  3. CHECKING for updates is relatively quick, 5 minutes or less. DOWNLOADING & INSTALLING the updates could take hours.
  4. Mine has "broken" before where I could not get new updates. Essentially I had to manually download two patches (KB-something) then restart my computer and then the updater worked.

I have been testing a windows 7 install in a virtual machine i made and windows update was still checking after 24 hours. i had found guides that instructed you to install convenience roll ups and framework updates but they never did work.

the only thing i found that worked is a free program called WSUS Offline. this is a program that will download the majority of windows updates for you and place them in a folder with its own installer. after doing all the updates with this program windows update started working for me.
