Wanting to upgrade my B150 Pc Mate to something I can overclock my i5 6400 with

I'm new to this whole rig building stuff. Got my computer 4 months ago and played it stock for the time being. Wanting to dig into it since this is my field of study as of right now. I've realized my motherboard doesn't even support overclocking. I'd like to get a new motherboard for a good price that is better then my B150 Pc Mate, allows OC, and is compatible with my rig

Intel i5-6400
GTX1060 3Gb
16gb ram,
120gb SSD
2 TB hard drive

Non 'K' processors aren't intended for overclocking, though I think there are ways to do it, I really wouldn't recommend it as the results wouldn't be good.

If you had a 'K' Processor like the 6600k or 6700k, a Z170 motherboard would be what you want.

Your i5-6400 is a Skylake CPU, which uses the LGA 1151 Socket. The socket is basically what the CPU sits in on the motherboard. So any motherboard that is LGA 1151 will work with your CPU. The Z170 bit is a little different, this is the chipset type, chipsets are what manage the communication between CPU and other components (If I'm not mistaken) The Z170 Chipset is good for overclocking. That motherboard you linked should work with your CPU.

I wouldn't recommend overclocking your CPU, but you'd have to research what other people with your CPU have done.

I'm willing to upgrade my CPU if I need to. I've just read around and seen myself that the K only seems to mean "unlocked" and I could push that 6400 from its 2.7 default to 3.5 easy but I wasn't sure how that worked if it wasnt "unlocked" But that motherboard is a for sure buy on my side then.

Some boards and chips (Z170) allow for non K processors to be overclocked, though it is not recommended as they weren't orginally intended to be overclocked it can be done. "Unlocked" basically means its free to alter the settings of the cpu (voltages, clock speeds etc) if the motherboard allows it.

Before making any final decisions I would research around and see what other boards people used to overclock their i5 6400's and to what speeds and basically if its worth doing it.

Sounds good to me. Any new information you find feel free to let me know! I'll be hunting around. Motherboards tend to be cheaper then processors. So if I can just replace that and run my processor OC'ed I'd be gold. Thanks man
