Hi, fellow tech-geeks,

Whether I buy it this Spring/Summer or later, I'd like to know a few model numbers to look at that will meet the following. I've seen and read about some Asus and MSI gaming laptops, but thought for sure some MSI supported multiple M.2 NVMe SSD slots, and lately can only find those with one slot.

Thanks for any suggestions. Below is my attempt to make the desktop-centric list from sticky post fit my laptop question:

Approximate Purchase Date: e.g.: Likely May to July timeframe

Budget Range: Ideal: $1500 or under (though I want to know about them, regardless of price)

System Usage from Most to Least Important:
  • Audio Editing
Video Editing (if ever find the time again)
Office type items: MS Office Suite, Taxes, etc
MS SQL Server / Oracle SQL Design/devlopment: primarily for education
Occasional photo editing, light web design
Remote Tech support to other individuals on occasion
    Web Browsing
Light Gaming - primarily really old games, but will not deny possibility of trying a new game: do not have to run max settings if do.
    Occasional Movie Watching
Are you buying a monitor: Likely Yes: Would prefer output possibilities of HDMI and DP

Component Preferences:

  • CPU = Intel Core i7 Quad Core, 6th generation or newer
    Support >= 16 GB Ram
    Support >= 2 M.2 NVMe SSDs
Support >= 2 2.5 HDD/SSD (optional if support multiple NVMe)
Graphics = At least decent - not looking for dual graphics cards or top of the line more expensive than worth graphics cards.
Screen Size = Prefer 17 inch screen
Screen Type = Most likely prefer IPS, but just prefer a quality screen.
Sound = Good sound better than bad sound, but that's not the priority
OS: Likely to come with laptop - prefer Windows 10 64 bit Pro)

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: newegg.com, amazon.com, ebay.com

Location: SC, USA

Overclocking: Likely No (At least not on laptop - maybe later on a desktop)

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: 1080p or greater on laptop screen. Somewhat considering curved and/or ultrawide monitors for an external monitor (prefer 2 or more video output options, such as HDMI and DP)

Additional Comments: Prefer a quiet and cool laptop, but number of NVMe SSD ports is what I'm after

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: It's what I would like

Solution
XoticPC has a search criteria "Multiple M.2/mSATA", which gives (for some reason, link is broken when I paste it here... just put back the two parts together):

http://www.xoticpc.com/custom-gaming-laptops-notebooks-gaming-laptops-ct-118-96-98.html#
!/p=clear&hddsupport=112&order=price

All listed models have two M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 slots, and probably all of them support RAID 0/1 should that matter.

In general, look for Clevo-based laptops (such as several Sager, Shenker, etc.).

Thanks for your thoughts. I'll look at those as well.

So far:
Asus GX700 appears to have 2 m.2 NVMe SSD slots, but no SATA connector for hard drive or 2.5 SSD
http://laptopmedia.com/highlights/inside-asus-rog-gx700-disassembly-internal-photos-and-upgrade-options/

Asus g752 - pretty sure only supports 1 M.2 NVMe and 1 2.5 SSD/HDD - I remember when it first came out. I initially drooled, then realized Oh, only ONE NVMe drive.

schenker xmg u716(clevo p775dm1) - Only supports 1 NVMe SSD and 1 2.5 SSD/HDD.

....
MSI GT80 - hmm... it's already getting some age, tech-wise - 4th gen i7, but it does have 4 M.2 SSD ports and at least 1 2.5 slot.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/MSI-GT80-Notebook-Review.136724.0.html

But not sure it does NVMe - no mention of it, not even "PCI Express" in the places I looked including manufacturer website. I wonder why they offered it on the gt80 but not newer laptops?

Thanks for the list, though. Maybe the multiple M.2 happened only until NVMe took over, so they just figured didn't need multiple connectors or that multiple would require more bandwidth than is possible with current chipsets. But that's just a guess.

zirconia, Thanks a ton for mentioning XOTICPC. I was searching there and decided to chat. The rep mentioned 2 laptops that could fit the bill. I'll have to seriously consider them later. I may just dream about them and not spend the cash when push comes to shove, but at least now I know. The 2 models mentioned were:
MSI GT73VR TITAN-017 --- 2 NVMe, 1 M.2 non-NVMe, 1 2.5
SAGER NP9873 (CLEVO P870DM3-G) --- 2 NVM3, 2 2.5

Awesome storage solutions

Gigabyte Aero 15 has 2 M.2 NVMe slot. It's what I've been eying for but too expensive for me.

If you do get one, make sure it doesn't have the keyboard problem like in this video:

Thanks, hendrachristian,

Good info there. Yeah, sounds like a good machine outside keyboard issues.

I still have to hold off, myself, for the time being. Have other higher priority budget items to take care of first. Eventually, I'll finally get some of that taken care of. On top of that, had to get another vehicle, so that definitely puts a dent in the budget.

I have MSI GT72S 6QE Dominator Pro - comes with 4 M2 drives (2 PCLe NVME + 2 Sata M2 + 1 slot for Sata HD plus a slot capable of holding another 2.5" Sata Drive via adpater cable thru Sata M2 slot + optical drive. A bit price friendlier than the one you were suggesting above. Wait for it to go on sale. I bought mine about 600.00 cheaper than list.

Fantastic Machine Layout and Expandability- I currently use 2 PCLe M2 (1TB + 2TB); I use 1 sata (2TB with adapter to M2 sata slot) ; I use other sata M2 for 1TB; and finally original Sata for 1TB storage; for a total of 7TB of hard disk storage plus I have the optical drive available.

Super fast machine.
Hope this helps
