Got hold of used ZOTAC GTX 970 AMP EXTREME from a friend, hardly used, bargain price.(Big improvement from my R9 270). I currently have a Corsair VS550 PSU, which I thought would do the job. Running the GTX 970 3 days, no problem, but tonight PC has lost all power twice. Wont switch back on unless I leave it for 3 or 4 minutes. I assume it is the PSU failing? (Not that the VS550 is a very good PSU from what I have read in your forum).
I have also read on this forum that the EVGA SUPERNOVA G2 550W is a good PSU to go with my GTX 970. Being a bit of a noob, are all PSU's the same size? I have a Zalman Z3 PLUS case, will it fit ok? and, are they difficult to install - I am worried I wont know where all the connections go - any tips for fitting it, or is it get a pen and paper and note/draw where all the connectors from the old PSU went? Thanks

Evga super PSU really recommend it got actually 1 Supernova G2 650 watt, just for the sake of upgradability, make yourself a favor and get a 650 watts just in case.

I might just do that, thanks. One further query - I am not sure if the saying "one size fits all" (sort of) applies to PSU connections and motherboard. I have a Gigabyte 970A-DS3P motherboard - will the EVGA 550 or 650 be ok (re voltage, power, connections etc). Thanks

it should be all good, it´s pretty much standard. If you can´t afford the EVGA there are some super PSUs like Antec TP-550C or seasonic s12ii or xfx 650w core edition

Pepslight - thanks for the informative reply and some PSU suggestions. The Antec TP-550C 80+ Gold gets really good reviews, and at a good price too. So will I be ok with that PSU with my - Gigabyte 970A-DS3P, AMD FX6300 Black Edition, and ZOTAC GTX 970 AMP EXTREME, 2 x 4gb 1600mhz DDR3 ram.? Thought I would double check before I order one. (I am not looking to overclock the processor or anything. Will no doubt upgrade in couple years time. Thanks)

hello Blackbird, i would like to make you a question seeing that you are TH expert. I have a I5-6600k and an Msi gtx 970, i was thinking to pass to an Evga supernova G2 550w coz i read (tom'shardware forum) that has more than enough power even if i overclock the cpu.
But what will happen in future if i buy a 1070 /1080 ?? will still be enough the power of the 550?? or maybe i have to buy the 650w version so i know that i dont have to worry for nothing??

Thanks in advance.

GPUS dyes are getting Smaller and Smaller everytime, meaning they consume and heat less and less. In the Future the Graphic cards should be even more Power efficient so it´s nothing to worry about. I remenber still the Old good AMD 6970 or the GTX 480. One of those was enough to Heat the whole room  Not forgetting you needed to calculate the Power bill at the end of the month
