Gigabyte R9 390 - PC restarts when loading game

Hello,

Just upgraded from a Sapphire R7 265 2GB 256b to a Gigabyte R9 390 Gaming 8GB 512b

Tried to load Trainz:A New Era and Civ VI (don't have other games installed at the moment but I suppose the result would be the same) and both crashed during loading. I could get in the menus, but when I loaded a previously saved game, the PC rebooted. Actually the computer did not restarted completely, only entered in Sleep Mode. I had to restart manually.

What could be the problem? PSU too weak?

My PC specs are as follows:

CPU - AMD FX-8350 4.0 GHz 8-core Socket AM3+ Box
CPU Cooler - Thermalright Silverarrow IB-E Extreme
MoBo - AsRocK 970-PRO3 R2.0 Socket AM3+
RAM - Corsair Value 16GB Dual Channel Kit 2x8GB DDR3 1600MHz CL11
GPU - Gigabyte R9 390 Gaming
PSU - Inter-Tech SL 700W
SDD - ADATA Premier SP550 480GB
HDD1 - WD 320GB
HDD2 - WD 500GB
And a Zalman Z11 Case with 5 fans.

that power supply is garbage

replace with a proper 650w unit

I did what you said, cleaned all drivers - same result.

Even reinstalled Win 7 - same result.

When i go to check the PC rating, as soon as it gets to Direct X Aero testing the PC restarts. I havent reinstalled games yet, but I guess this behavior is not ok.

No definitely not ok! Double check that all the power cables to the GPU are properly connected (the 6+2 pin connectors can be fiddly) and that the card itself is properly seated (all the way home and level). Assuming that is all in order, the most likely cause is either the GPU is defective or the PSU isn't delivering enough power. If you can find someone with a PC (or if you have a second PC) you could test it in there to verify.

Will try to remove the HDDs to try and reduce the power consumption first. And also double check all cables. Maybe I can reach a conclusion :)

Anyway, I mentioned in the first post, the PC does not completely restart. It goes in a sort of Sleep Mode. The restart button does not work, I have to manually shut it down and restart it.

Now I tried to run a 1080p movie (have no idea how much it stresses out the video card) and it ran just fine.

Yesterday before reinstalling OS i used the latest drivers from AMD website version Crimson ReLive Edition 16.12.2
Today I use version 15.201.1102.0

Video doesn't stress the GPU much at all, so it's not surprising that works ok. I have a R9 390 myself and am running it off a 560W PSU. The total system draw is ~400W under load, so your PSU should be sufficient, assuming it is working properly. At this stage the most likely reason is that the GPU is defective.
