Graphics Card is underperforming

Since about a week, games on my laptop have been experiencing a massive fps drop during gaming sessions. Normally I was able to play Rainbow Six Siege at 45fps on medium settings and 60fps at custom low. While I know that's bad in itself, that's not the issue. A week ago I reverted back to windows 8.1 from 10 using the recovery image on my HP Laptop because I had a network card issue. Ever since, the games I play have been acting up. The fps suddenly drops from 65 to 25 in game and keeps fluctuating.

PC Specs
CPU - Intel Core i7-5500u
RAM - 8gigs
GPU - Nvidia GeForce 840M

- I have updated my Nvidia drivers after I did my recovery.
- I did not update my BIOS after the recovery though. Could that be a problem?

I am currently running 8.1 and wondering if it's anything related to the OS and if upgrading back to Win 10 could solve it?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Restoring to a previous state could jumble up some registries and drivers. No, it didn't affect your bios since this is just a Windows feature. "Upgrading" back to Windows 10 will again further twist things. The best solution is usually a clean install. You could check your temps by doing a benchmark/ stress test (although I doubt this is the issue).
