Was now a good time to upgrade a 6 year old system? (i5 2500k)

Hello. So yesterday I finally pulled the trigger on upgrading my old system. I spent about 2 months waiting for some deals and deciding which parts I'd get. I'm having a bit of buyer's remorse.

This was my old system:

Note that I replaced the 560 TI with a GTX 970.

This is what I purchased yesterday (price came to about 1650 after hunting down some coupons)

Was my system old enough to really warrant a full upgrade, or should I have just purchased a 1080 and stuck it in my old system? The remorse isn't coming from the money spent on the new system, but from not potentially getting the full value of my old system by just upgrading the card. Would I have ended up with pretty much the same performance if I just stuck a 1080 in my old system and called it a day? Are the new components I purchased so much better it made upgrading worth it?

I can definitely see some buyers remorse creeping in. 2500k's in this day and age still have some life in them, but they're nowhere near top end anymore. Maybe you can repurpose the machine for other purposes or turn it into an experimental/overclocking PC? If you had stuck a 1080 with your 2500k, I imagine there would be some pretty noticeable bottlenecking. I think the new stuff you've bought is going to be way better than what you had before.

You've pretty much found yourself everything that is top of the line today and compiled it. Just watch out for the 7700k's thermals. I see people are having troubles keeping the temps of that thing in check. You may also want to find some more case fans, since the Define has 7-8 fan slots and a pretty restrictive intake, but only come with two fans.

Depends. If you just browse with this system, it was a waste.
If you are heavy gamer + streamer and with multi monitor setup @ 4k, you will see a lot of difference.
I5 2500k is a good CPU, but i7 7700k is way better in all aspects.
Probably you could've waited a few months for Ryzen to come out and check what would happen with intel prices then.
May i ask why did you upgraded ? What was the reason, a game or something other has been torturing your PC ?

Well it's too late for me to cancel so I'm just gonna suck it up and go through with it. I feel a little bad that I didn't use my old system to its full potential by cutting its life short early but I am looking forward to building a new computer and gaming on it, so there's that.

Anyone have any suggestions on what to do with my old PC? Keep in mind it has a GTX 970 inside of it, not a GTX 560 TI. I replaced the 560 a year ago. Should I just sell the PC? How much could I get for it?
