System shutdown suddenly. Did my GPU die?

Backstory: So just sort of built my second PC but I re-used my GPU. All my pc parts are less than a year old, but my GTX 970 from EVGA is about 2years almost 3 years old. Now I had just gotten up before class and decided to play some overwatch before my 1st class, I have the PC on for about 45mins or so. All of the sudden the PC shutsdown, instant turned off. It reboots, but I'm getting no image on screens (1hdmi and 1VGA) from the GPU and the air smells funny and I'm thinking something is gone.
So I have done a little googling and tried taking out the GPU from the Motherboard and no results and it is no longer recognized in ASrocks hardware software. I tried plugging it in and out of the power supply, no results. When the PC is turned on, everything else appears to be good, but there is no image from GPU and the fans act like they want to start, but will not actually spin continually. I plugged my hdmi cord into the integrated graphics and can use a single monitor for the PC now, but nothing seems to be working from the GPU. So main question...is my GPU the casualty? I really hope that it would not be the PSU as everything else seems to be working.
Specs:
PSU: Corsair RM 850W
Intel- 6700k Skylake
OS:Windows 10
Motherboard: ASrock Fatal1ty 7
3 SSDs: 1-120g 850evo, 1-500g 850evo, 1-500g 850evo M.2
GPU: EVGA GTX 970 A.C FTW
P.S Thank you very much for anyone that can help. I will also be trying to see if the GPU will work in a friends PC later on today.

Edit: Oddly, I unplugged the power cable from the PSU and plugged it back in and now the fans are running at full speed, but still no images getting displayed on connections.

Solution
A good way to see if your GPU is the culprit is to take it out and try running on integrated graphics. If your PC boots up fine, it is most likely a faulty GPU. If your computer still fails to boot up, it is most likely the power supply.
