Hi all,

I have a Z68MA-G45 G3 motherboard, with an i3 2100 and a recently upgraded Zotac GTX 1060 6GB, as my old 560Ti failed me and that was the best value for money investment I could get my hands on.

Now I want to change my processor (obviously the current setup is not a good pairing), but what should I go for:
1. Buying an i5 3570k at say $200 on ebay, or
2. Changing my motherboard altogether and going for the latest gen processors? If I were to change the mobo, are all my other parts compatible? I do dread having to reinstall Windows.

P.S. I have not kept up with the current trend when it comes to RAM, etc.

I forgot to mention I want to play games like the Witcher 3, GTA V and the latest titles for the next 3-4 years at 1080p maxed out/ultra/very high at 60 fps.

Solution
Okay, I see three choices.

1. Buy a 3570K. Upside is that overclocking is possible but downside is you don't know what you are getting, especially used.
2. Buy a new i5-7600K CPU, Mobo, RAM and maybe even PSU. Latest technology but it will be way more expensive than $200
3. Buy a Xeon CPU. This will cost about $200, give you 4 cores/8 threads, significantly improves over the i3 2100 and will be at the same relative performance level as a newer i5. No overclocking will be possible and some settings may have to be tweak if you are video editing. This would be my choice if you don't have the money. And maybe even if you have the money.

Here's the Xeon 1230 V2. You must make sure to get the V2 version which is the LGA 1155...
I would not pay $200 for a 3570K when you can find i7 3770K's for around that price. 3570 non-K's start at $80 and I see a "K" model for $135, but even that seems a bit high.

If you get a newer gen CPU, you'll need a new motherboard and RAM, but honestly an i7 3770 would be a good bit faster than even an i5 7600 in the games you mentioned, and cheaper. Newer gen chips have a ~20% IPC advantage, but hyperthreading gives the i7 a ~30% advantage over a 3570 and on socket 1155, you can overclock even non-K CPUs by 400mhz.

This gives a comparison (albeit synthetic) of the three CPU's. Your i3-2100 scores 3648 on Passmark
