Hello everyone!

I've been meaning to ask since l don't have a monitor that is 1080p in resoultion and I'm planning to buy the Zotac GTX 1050 ti mini 4gb this end of the month. My old GPU is Radeon HD Sapphire 6570 4gb so I now the latest games won't cut for this old guy. I only need to know since most I see over the videos and reviews on youtube are all tested on 1080p in 1920x1080 resolution which is 1080p for the GTX 1050 series. It provide FPS of 40+ more in ultra high settings respectively. Can my frames increase higher if I reduced it to my monitor's resolution to about 1366x768? Also my old monitor only has a VGA plug so I have to use a VGA to HDMI converter. Will that also affect my monitor?

Solution

yes, IF your cpu is...

I am no expert here but reducing the resolution most definitely should increase your fps. I am just going off of my own personal experience and not off of a professional opinion though. I don't have an answer for you regarding the vga hdmi converter.

yes, IF your cpu is good enough, reducing resolution makes the cpu the main fps determinator

and yes VGA monitor will affect the quality of the picture as it is analog

Could getting an active HDMI to VGA converter alleviate this downside?

Hello Whitefurr :). Yes it will. That's the nutshell version.

It will however make things look more Lego-like. I don't mean it will ruin your visual experience but make a Donald Trump out of 1,000 Lego bricks. Now make Donald Trump out of 10,000 Lego bricks. Your visual experience will be reduced and the FPS will increase. The visual impact is less with CRTs. I would agree that a resolution dip would be a bit better than bottoming out or significantly reducing textures, shadows and AA. The visual impact will be less with 1366x768. 1024x768? Obviously more.

There are compromises here. You can set your resolution with Nvidia's Control Panel. There's a Change Resolution subsection in the Display section already showing in the left hand pane. Easy to find, it is. I think all you want to do is be able to stay at or above 60FPS because your monitor is probably 60Hz. You could then enable vsync.

With that being said you are using a VGA connection. This will already limit your resolution. The cable isn't necessarily the limiting factor but instead the actual connection at the monitor. http://www.l-com.com/what-is-the-difference-between-vga-svga-and-uxga-and-does-l-com-sell-cables-for-each explains it better than I ever could. The other obvious difference is that the HDMI or display port connections also carry the audio(single and multi-channel audio feeds) through the same cable.

Now, let's get confusing. I am currently using a CRT monitor because my main TV died a while back and money? HA!!! What's the resolution limit of this old Compaq? 1280x1024. That's the highest resolution Windows allows me in advanced display settings. Which resolution am I using? 1792x1344. Chew on that for 2.1 seconds. I have an EVGA 970FTW with an i5 4690K so I REALLY didn't like the 1280x1024 picture after I was used to 1080p.

As a side effect you will reduce VRAM usage. It will of course reduce the strain on the GFX carrd but will use less graphics memory as a bonus. Want to see your GPU and CPU as you game? https://www.msi.com/page/afterburner has an OSD that you can customize. There is a Memory section and a RAM section. The memory section is referring to VRAM usage. That allowed me to make sure I am not exceeding my GFX card's memory resources which is obviously bad which would mean I should reduce some in game settings. I don't like the words Page File.

I have 4GB of VRAM. The game was only using 2.743GB of VRAM aka GDDR5 memory.

BUT I really don't know what you will need to do. Your CPU might hold your performance back. You might not have enough system RAM. Your PC might well exceed a game's needs and you could INCREASE your resolution past it's default. I am not touching my monitor's refresh rate. With a CRT monitor that(increaing teh refresh rate past the monitor's limit) can prove deadly, for the monitor. An LCD or LED will simply say out of range or offer some other error message screen saver.

Thanks for that, I saw the resolution list on the VGA but thankfully it will work.
I'm just glad the converters aren't going to be a hassle since I found one in the super market.

You're welcome :) Let us know how it works. FPS gain?

I have an Intel core i7 3.4GHZ
700 of PSU and 8gb of RAM. I still have two slots left to add more 1600MHZ of RAM.

I'll let you know once the GPU I ordered arrives along with the converter! I'm actually a little excited and strangely uppity since this is my first GPU that I bought with my own hard earned money for 6 months. <3
I bought the Zotac GTX 1050 ti OC 4gb edition. I'll let you know once I got the card. ^_^
