How can I increase game performance?

Hello everyone! I'm a PC gamer, and I have loved gaming for such a long time now I lost track of when I started gaming. Sadly, I'm not able to enjoy many games which catch my eye nowadays, because with my current build I can't run them at a decent frame rate. I play on a laptop and my computer is practically brand new out of the box. Most games run fine, but because my laptop uses Intel HD Family Graphics, I'm not able to play anything that is GPU intensive. The CPU is a Quad Core Intel i7-4510U, and it works great for almost everything. I use both the built in laptop monitor and a dell monitor which I have connected using an HDMI cord, if it matters. Anyways, my question is, what can I do to increase performance in games like ArmA 3, where I get around 25 fps on the lowest settings at 1:1 scaling. Would an external gpu be ideal? Should I just ditch my laptop and get a desktop whenever I can afford one? Is overclocking possible? Would overclocking be safe if it is possible? If an external GPU is the best way to go, what kind of GPU should I get? I can't afford a new computer right now, but I could likely afford an external gpu. I'm not sure how the prices run on them, so we'll just have to see.

Thank you in advanced!

not too much wiggle room with laptops as far as squeezing more performance out of them. Best thing would be to keep it cool, dust free and get rid of any viruses/malaware/bloat software/ shut any un-needed programs off. Also you have a 4xxx CPU... from what i remember thats a couple of years old... laptops don't do well with age.

From your description, I would suggest for you to build up a desktop PC. If you are really on a budget, You could pickup peripherals 2nd hand on kijiji or what not, it's gonna cut the cost quite a bit. You could even do away with an i3 if you expect to upgrade in 2 years or so. There is also such a thing as Overclocking a non-K cpu such as i3-6100, i haven't looked if possible with new KabyLake. But this could...

in the end. you would most likely end up getting something like......

a system based on

i5-7500
gtx1060

Which will run you around 1100 (bloated price) with Peripherals/windows/all components.

A cheaper, faster alternative would be to go on Craigslist and buy a used PC and throw in a store bought GPU... boom... instant gaming computer.

sure. but, today everyone wants to get TOP buck for everything. I've seen a lot of high prices for old system. not to mention that most people would pay for NEW system instead of buying 2nd hand ( i know i suggested the gpu 2nd hand).

but yes, definetly something to look into.
