Hi all,

My time with my GTX970 is coming to an end sadly - I launched resident evil 7 last night and my card struggled in the higher brackets.

So - the big question is, what will I upgrade to?

I've been eyeing up a 1070 however from what I've seen there's not much of a performance advantage between that and a 970.

I've also been seeing a lot of negativity on the 10 series cards in general with many saying the performance isn't adequate for the price of them.

Look forward to hearing your suggestions!

While the 1070's price to performance ratio doesn't compare well to the sub $300 dollar cards, it's still the cheapest viable upgrade for your card. In my opinon, anything cheaper wouldn't give you enough of a performance increase to justify the upgrade. The 1070 performs the sames as a 980 ti which would be a nice upgrade. You can also wait for Vega to launch later this year if you'd like some more options. I've linked Tom's hierarchy chart below as reference for relative gpu performance.

Well, i don't really know where you read that from, but about the performance they are clearly wrong.

I can confirm that the 1070 is muuch stronger than a 970 as you can see here:

About their prices... Well, they do are High-Tier GPUs so obvisouly they will be pricey, nowhere to run here. But IMO it's great price/performance. Not exaggerated like a Titan, so it's a very decent upgrade choice.

Otherwise, if you wish a nice improvement and don't paying much, go with a GTX 1060. I have it and I ran RE 7 with maxed-out settings with 60+ FPS with ease in 1080p. But i wouldn't invest on it in your case. It'd be much wiser to save a bit more and grab a 1070 for "future-proofing"

Out of curiosity, what's your CPU?

If youre going to spend money on an upgrade, get the 1070. i wouldnt bother with a 480 or a 1060. they are both "upgrades" but not by much.
have you tried overclocking your 970 ? might be able to push slightly higher settings and extend the life of your card

Just to confirm I'm aware that the 1070 is the stronger card but from fps analysis it doesn't hold that much over an OC'do 970 - then again I saw the same comparison on another site showing a considenable improvement.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

And I have a core I5-6600KK CPU

To be honest an insanely OC'd 970 would be more in the range of a stock 1060/980.

Well, there's definitely no bottleneck in the CPU's side with that 6600K so no reason to go below a 1070.

6600K + 1070 is an insanely good combo for 1080p 144Hz or even some 1440p 60Hz.

You need to be sure of those reviews and their trustabilty , as i suppose you already know, their difference is quite big. You will definitely have no problem with that upgrade.
