Intel rapid stroage technology error received

Inspiron 5559

sata disk on controller 0 port 0 at risk (smart event)

been getting this for some time now
computer runs fine
some preliminary browisng been done nothing more, and for now it seems this error indiciates a failing of the hard drive that is about to come in the near future.

1. what does this error truly indicate
2. what can be done

That message does not tell you the details of the nature of the problem. It only tells you that SOME problem has been detected in the HDD attached to Port 0 of Controller chip 0 of your mobo. The detection system is internal in the HDD itself, and it is using a standard system called S.M.A.R.T. to communicate that to your mobo, which then shows you this alert message.

Now it is your responsibility to investigate exactly what the problem with the HDD is. For this purpose you can go to the website of the HDD maker and download from there a Diagnostic Utility package that you can install on your computer and run to diagnose the drive. For example, if the HDD was made by WD, their utility is called Data Lifeguard, and other makers have...

Now it is your responsibility to investigate exactly what the problem with the HDD is. If you need help getting or using the software, or in understanding what error details it displays, the HDD maker's Tech Support people can advise you. Or, maybe we can here if you can tell us what the software tool says.

Some of the most common reasons for this type of message is that certain types of problems on the HDD that the unit can "fix" by itself have happened a bit too often, and that will eventually prevent the self-fixing process from working. So far, you have not lost any data and the unit still works, but it IS likely to fail if this continues. So NOW is the time to buy a replacement unit and transfer all your stuff onto it, then throw out the old failing drive. To do the transfer, most HDD makers also can supply you with another utility, one used to make a CLONE copy of ALL of your data on the old drive onto a new replacement.
