Im thinking about ordering an i7 4790k and i currently have an i5 4690k. My mob is mis z97 gaming 5. My question is do i have to do anything software related to prepare for swapping out cpus? Such as uninstalling old drivers first or anything like that?

Solution
Technically, you should reinstall windows. But you should be alright just swapping in the CPUs and calling it a day. Though I'd make sure the drivers are up to date AFTER you put the new CPU in.

Oh and definitely update the BIOS (if there is one) before the CPU swap, just to make sure nothing weird happens.

For some reason windows can get picky about what CPU is installed. I'm not sure why. But from my experience with windows, swapping out CPUs made my systems glitch a little more and seemed to have more bugs. Reinstalling fixed everything.

You can try just swapping in the CPU and not reinstalling windows. If you don't find anything strange or any bugs, I'd say your fine.

do you think if i do have those bugs going back to the i5 will get rid of them? because currently i have no good way of backing up my files.

EDIT

Actually i do have 2 drives with an HDD being my secondary and sad being my primary. Can i just copy files to hdd that i want to back up or will windows wipe the hdd too.

If you have a setup like mine with a SSD boot drive, with programs I want to load fast and the Hard Drive(s) for data and other programs and utilities. I would move my documents file to the hard drive, and backup any data to want to be sure you don't lose to the hard drive.

I've not tried swapping out a CPU lately so I'm not sure how your windows will react. Perhaps just reloading the motherboard chipset drivers will reset the settings to the new CPU and you won't have to reinstall windows. Just be sure everything critical is backed up so you don't lose anything important to you if you have to reinstall Windows. I'm not to crazy about flashing the BIOS unless there is no other thing to try. Good luck.
