My motherboard slot is a PCI Express 2.0 x16 and I know that PCI Express 3.0 is backwards compatible. I was just wondering do I need to get a PCI Express 3.0 x16 as well or will any PCIe 3.0 card work?

Solution

Any PCIE 3.0 GPU will be x16, and they will all work in a PCIe 2.0 x16 slot, thats the backwards compatibility

I think you have this confused.

If you have a GPU or whatever card that works in your motherboard now, backwards compatible for your new board means that card will work correctly in the new board. Unless your GPU is ancient it is likely already PCIe 3.0 x16 anyway.

I was wanting to upgrade my video card. I forgot which card I had in it and was just confused when i seen that my slot is for PCIe 2.0 x16 I just wanted to make sure i could put a PCIe 3.0 in it, and if so if it could be just any PCIe 3.0 or had to be x16 too.
