Broken GPU/ Should I upgrade? Really need help!

So, I built a computer in 2012 for mainly purposes of gaming and schoolwork. I've had no issues, until recently. For the past few months the monitor would sometimes not recognize the computer, so I would wiggle the hdmi cord (and replug) until it worked. I had to replace the hdmi cable, but it continued to do the same thing. Until, as of recently it wont recognize at all. Is it basically overheated and needs to be replaced?

The GPU I have is:
EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti FPB (Fermi) 01G-P3-1561-AR Video Card.

The motherboard I have is:
ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

Memory I have (in case it helps):
MEM 4Gx2|CORSAIR CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B (8GB total; 2 4GB sticks)

I was looking at options for replacing if that's necessary and came across this video card:
EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB SSC GAMING ACX 3.0, 6GB GDDR5, LED, DX12 OSD Support (PXOC) Graphics Card 06G-P4-6267-KR

Would this be compatible with my motherboard if the video card needs to be replaced? And, is it a worthy video card? Thanks in advance and sorry for the lengthy post.

Would you also recommend that I upgrade anything else? My computer did tend to run hot, so I'm thinking some sort of cooling system may help...any ideas or recommendations would be amazingly helpful! I'm even willing to pay for assistance, I'm so desperate to get it fixed.

Solution
I wouldn't be spending on a CPU upgrade , the 2500k is still a good chip , you've got a good board , you could overclock it easily if necessary.

A new GPU is plainly a given.
Aa you know that system needs some TLC & a proper clean out.
Case Fanwise what you have is enough if they're all running ok still .

You really need to sort that mass of PSU cables out , there's no way on this planet you need all them , get as many tied up & flattened to the case bottom as possible , I'm seeing a lone hard drive & maybe an optical in there ??what are all the molex splitters for??
There's not much airflow coming from that front fan with both the hard drive bay & all the cables blocking it.

The amount of dust you have in there is going to be...

yeah gtx 1060 will be compatible, but are you sure that your GPU is dead and not monitor?
Try other monitor with your PC, try other GPU with your monitor.
Might be dead PSU also.
You can list CPU if you want help about upgrade.

Yes the gpu would be a good upgrade. If you have the money adding some ram would help as well as some cooling if you said it is running hot. What case are you using and how many fans? What cpu cooler?

What CPU do you have? It is possible that it could bottleneck the 1060.
What are your CPU temps during gaming? Anything less than 80C would be more or less normal, especially if you are overclocking. That being said,a better CPU cooler couldn't hurt. The CM 212 Evo is one of the best bang-for-the-buck air coolers out there. It will even beat some AIO water coolers.

I have this computer case: Cooler Master Computer Case RC-692-KKN2

I have 3 fans, but I don't have an actual cooling system.

I don't have another monitor or GPU to switch in around, but I'll be going to my parents' tomorrow, so I'll take it and see if it works with their monitor or GPU.

I really kind of think it's the GPU though, since before it completely didn't show, I would have to wiggle the HDMI cord by the GPU's HDMI slot and replug it there for it to eventually work. I never had to touch the end of the HDMI cable by the monitor.

Doubt anything on a 1155 motherboard would bottleneck a 1060. Its not tilla x4 965 or i5 750 and cpu intensive games you really see a big drop in frame-rates with a 1060 over a 6700k. CPu's really have not progressed as much over the past 6 or 7 years as people seem to think. http://www.kotaku.com.au/2016/07/how-much-your-old-cpu-slow-down-your-gtx-1060-or-rx-480/

I would agree if the CPU is an I3 or above. If it is a single core Celeron or even a Pentium then I would think bottlenecking is possible..

Its a 1155 board most likely its at least a dual core. Most likely more. But ok what cpu is it for the record. Maybe I am getting ahead of myself. I have been around the building community for probably way too long and forget there are people that have not been building for as long.

I have an i5, I'm not sure exactly which, but I think 4460

Again, I agree with you, but since we don't know what the specs are, we can't assume that they would build the same system we would build. There may have been financial issues causing the choice of a lower performing CPU. We just don't know, and therefore I had to ask. At least the answer eliminated some possible problems.

You are fine with the upgrade. Depending how much you wanted to spend, you could get a used i7 off ebay, better cpu cooler and some more fans and the vga card and be like a almost brand new pc.

Yeah after it stopped working I ordered a new hdmi, hoping that may be the issue, but it still didn't work at all.

Hmm yeah, that sounds amazing. I have like 250-300 US dollars to use.

I agree, and I forget because I have been building since the 90s that what is common sense to me on what not to skimp on, it is not always that way. People have not been at this as long as I have and are new or have bought a computer someone else has built. I forget the simple questions and sometimes assume things I should not.

In this case if its not the cable and the vid card is bad I say upgrade the vid card and work on your cooling. Buy some more fans for your pc. If you need help with figuring out what fans you need snap some piuctures of your case inside and out and I would more than happy helping.

Okay, I actually specifically have an i5 2500K PCU

And when gaming, it would sometimes get to maybe around 100C

That is way too hot you definitely need to upgrade the cooling, especially if you are using the stock Intel cooler.

More airflow in the case and cleaning the heatsink and replacing the thermal compound should help. If there is no money for a new heatsink right this min that is understandable. At least purchase new fans for the case to improve airflow. Clean your current cooler and clean and replace the thermal compound.

Thank you tremendously for your help! I will be able to get a picture of the inside and outside in like 4 hours from now at home. This is greatly appreciated. How much do the i7s run for on ebay? I may be able to throw in an extra $100 ($350-$400) possibly...and this seems maybe worthy as a part of that:
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan.

Any idea on how to upload pictures here? I was able to snap some, but I'm not sure of how to upload them here with a url.
