Operating systems have limits. Some Linux OS limits are in the thousands of disks. Desktop Windows has some limitations with the "A" to "Z" designation for disks. Your motherboard has a limited number of places to connect disks, typically 2 - 8. You could then add disk controller card(s) to have a few dozen more.
