A few months ago I set up my laptop to connect to the internet via an ethernet cable connected to my router. I haven't used it since, but now after building my desktop I found that plugged in ethernet cables would not be detected by either my new desktop or the laptop.

Things I have tried:
1. Enabling Ethernet in Network Connections
2. Uninstalling and reinstalling the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
3. Rebooting the router
4. Reseting the router
5. Enabling 'Obtain an IP address automatically" and 'Obtain DNS server address automatically' under Ethernet Properties
6. Restarting the computers
7. Used different ethernet cables

From what I can tell, both the laptop and the desktop are suffering from the same issue. What should I do?

Solution
Be sure to disable the wireless adapter.

Also ensure that the applicable wired ethernet port is enabled. The desktop may have two wired ports: One on the motherboard and a second in a PCI-x slot or even USB-Ethernet adapter.

If your router is just a router and you have a separate modem I'd suggest removing the router from the picture and connect one of the two (or both individually) to the modem to see if you have internet then.

Only other thing I can think of is if you'd somehow gotten into your router and shut off the DHCP yet both computers are looking to the router for a TCP/IP address and not getting one.
