Playing With Steam Friends on a Disc Copy of a Game

Hey guys, this is kind of a weird question but I'm just getting into PC Gaming, and I am going to buy a few multiplayer games like Doom and Battlefield 1 etc on a Disc (DvD ROM) for re-sale purposes, and I want to play with some of my buddies on Steam, except their copy is a downloaded one from Steam. So, can I play with them and will I still be able to have all of the features like Achievements and the like?

Buying the games on Disc aren't going to let you resell them, the physical copies have a one time use key that ties it permanently to a Steam or Origin account. Battlefield 1 doesn't even have a disc release in most markets, just a box that contains an Origin code for the game. If you want to resell your games these days, you have to play on console.
