Sudden CPU performance drop

About 2-3 days ago my CPU performance dropped significantly. Where I could previously play Witcher 3 on high settings with no issues at all, games like EU4 are now giving me trouble.

I cannot see what the cause is.

I have updated my graphics card drivers, I have update Windows and I see no spike in CPU temperature.

When I run a benchmark on my PC build, my CPU is scored so badly it sits in the 0% percentile. Even my SSD drive scores very low. (Only my graphics card and HDD score well). Previously when running the benchmark this was not the case.

Is there anything else that might cause such a sudden drop in performance?

PC specs:

- i5 6600k
- Z170A Tomahawk AC Motherboard
- 8GB DDR4 Ram
- GTX970 (MSI)

I have Windows 10.

There was an issue with the "Anniversary" update, which I seemed to have stopped. After this my benchmarking was back to normal, but then after playing a few minutes of BF1 I was feeling some lag again.

I am really at a loss at the moment. Thinking of formatting my PC to see if that helps.
