My graphics card just crapped out on me recently so I'm looking to buy a new one. I figure I should upgrade but I'm not sure what a good option is. My system specs:

Msi a88xm gaming motherboard
Amd 7700k Radeon r9 3.4 ghz overclocked to 3.99
4gb 2133 Mhz ram (planning on upgrading this)
Amd 290x 4gb (old card)
120gb ssd
1 tb hard drive
Not sure on psu

I'd like to upgrade to a graphics card that could handle the vive, and I thought the gtx 1070 or 1080 looked good, however in researching it, it looks like there might be a bottleneck issue? I'm also not 100% sure those cards are even compatible with my system.

I realize I might need to upgrade other components if I really want to go for vr stuff, but are there any upgrades I can make that don't involve getting a new motherboard/cpu?

You have several concerns going at the same time.

Since your end goal is VR with Vive, then the A10-7700k is under spec for it. I don't believe any FM2+ processor would be sufficient for the Vive. According to Vive's own minimum specs you'll need at least an i5-4590 or FX-8350. As far as I'm aware, the FM2+ processors aren't of the same level or performance. As such, I believe you'd need a bigger upgrade in order to pursue VR (CPU, motherboard and perhaps RAM).

As for a graphics card (ignoring the VR issue), there's little point in going beyond a GTX 1050 ti or RX 470 because of bottlenecking. That's not to say you couldn't get a GTX 1070 or 1080 now in preparation of using it later with the CPU and motherboard upgrade.

The top processor is the A10-7890k, but since you're using a graphics card an APU is somewhat wasteful, so the x4 860k or 880k is preferable in my opinion. I see you've overclocked your APU, so you may want an x4 for overclocking. It's a difficult thing to recommend due to the slight differences in clockspeeds (though I did notice a fair boost in fps for my x4 760k).

All in all, it really depends how much you're willing to spend now and how much you want to consider some of the issues I've raised for you to consider.

EDIT: I wouldn't worry too much about compatibility. I run my x4 760k with a GTX 750 ti. There are no compatibility issues.
