Computer goes black and restarts while playing games.

So whenever I play any games on my computer, my computer will be fine but whenever there tends to be more action on the screen it will go black and then freeze up. Sometimes(not often) it will come back after 2-3 seconds, but usually just freeze a bit after that.

I ran the furmark stress test I saw on another similar thread on here and it always makes my computer freeze up after a couple minutes. But not sure what exactly that means and what to fix/where to go from there. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated!

The only way to fix an old degrading CPU is to get a new one, but first we need to figure out if that is what the problem is.

However the CPU is like 9 years old at this point. It would probably be worth replacing regardless. You would need a new motherboard as well and possibly new RAM.

Pain in the butt but unless it's something else that's what you're looking at.

83 Is pretty hot, i'm not sure what the limit is on the older CPU's might check into that.

Well, after some research it says 67.9c is the hottest they like a i7 950 to go... the temperature that the furmark stress test shows is for the CPU or something else? Because if it's the CPU then I guess we found the problem and now need advice on the solution/best replacements.

If that is what the manufacturer says the max is, it is definitely overheating and turning off your computer.

It really depends on your budget what CPU you should replace it with and what you run.

If you were running whatever you needed to without issues, I would just suggest a budget Skylake and a cheap H110 board, going that route you may be able to keep your RAM. A cheap H110 board and the i3 6100 would be less than $200 together.

I like playing games :(
What if I can find the same processor but new? Would that fix this problem?

Yes and no, It would be extremely hard to find an 8-year old processor that is brand new. It would be much better to get a modern CPU. Unfortunately that means paying a premium pricetag. The i3 I mentioned earlier is about 15% faster than your current one (assuming yours was running at 100%, which it isn't) for only $100. But it's also only a duo-core processor so it still won't run everything well. If you have the money I would suggest either a 6500 or 6600k, or if you really have the money an i7 7700k. The 6XXX will run off of Z170 (for the K, or H110 or B150 for the 6500) and the 7700K will require a Z270MB which are brand new and will run off of DDR4 RAM. If you got the 7700K and all new MB and RAM you would be set for quite some time.

Amazon has my same CPU but new for about $200, newegg has it for $300.

The other options you mentioned with i7's I'm guessing all require a new mobo and RAM as well I'm guessing?

For that price you might as well get all new stuff. An i7 7700K is roughly 80% faster than the 950 for around $300. A decent MB and new RAM is another $200-250. You will save money by getting a new CPU of the same make but for that price it is EXTREMELY overpriced for the performance.
If I were you I would get an i5 6500 (about $200), its 30% faster and can use an $80 H110 MB and possibly your same RAM. New DDR4 would be about $50 for 8GB.

Depending on what you can spend I would get a Z270 MB and a 7700K and some good 3000+MHz DDR4 RAM, probably going to be about $600 for all that.

The first setup you said would be the best performing right? So for around $550-$600 you think?

Yes the i7700K and some great DDR4 RAM would be a great setup. But like I said it is pretty expensive. The best RAM kits are $200+ now, but you can get a decent kit (8GB 2x4GB) for about $70. I would get a good midrange board as well (the Asus ROG Maximus IX Hero is a great board) and your cooler should be sufficient for the CPU, after all that it is going to be about $650 in the US.

A little bit of a cheaper option which will still give you plenty of performance would be an i5 6600K, with a Maximus VIII Hero MB, and a decent (but slightly slower than the previous) DDR4 (8GB 2x4GB) Kit for about $60, coming out to about $500

I would also add custom cooling to cool the GPU's, CPU, and MB on a custom loop, no idea how much that would cost, probably like $300 or so.

But this is just what I would do lol.

But that's just to give you an idea of what I really High-end machine would look like.

But I also am gaming on a Predator X34 and a side monitor, also 2k, so it requires plenty of GPU power lol.

Ok I'm gonna look up some mobo/CPU/ram combo's and post back here to see what you think if you don't mind. Is replacing the mobo/CPU hard? I've never done that, I've replaced power supply, video card, and hard drives, but not a mobo and CPU before. My other parts should work fine with any combo I get correct?

And yeah that setup is nice, I wish I was rich to buy a rig like that

Yeah that's a hardcore setup. And yes as long as the CPU/RAM/MB are compatible usually 99% of the time the rest of the system should be fine just let me know what you pick out and I'll tell you if its good.
