Hello, I came across a weird problem and any help would be appreciated. I had a pdf file open with music running in the background. All of a sudden random artifacts started appearing on top of the screen. I tried switching windows and a gray screen appeared. While this was happening the music was playing perfectly fine in the background. After a couple of seconds of just entering random commands, I hard reset the pc. It booted up, the fans and lights turned on. It took a little longer than usual but the pc posted as well, but the monitor received no signal. This problem has persisted since. I tried connecting the pc to a spare tv but the same thing happened.

Note: I have seen artifacts described above a couple of times before (always outsides of games for some reason) but they usually lasted only for a split second. I consistently bench marked and stress tested my pc (GPU and CPU) and to my knowledge there has been no thermal or power issue.

Note 2: This exact gray screen problem with music in the background has happened just once before ( ~6months ago) but a hard reset fixed it.

With the exception of the above examples and a very rare blue screen, this pc has been very reliable for more than 4 years. Any guidance would be appreciated, thanks.

My system:
CPU: AMD FX-8350 (was not OCed when this problem occurred)
Motherboard: M5 a97 le R2.0
GPU: XFX 7970 (did not OC past the factory overclock)
PSU: Corsair TX 750W
OS: Windows 7

Thanks for the fast response, I do not have another system that can hold the 7970 but I will buy a cheap card to see if it works. I will update as soon as possible and again thanks for the help.

Ah, that is a problem. I wont be able to afford a high end gpu for this . I also doubt I can convince a friend to risk their gpu with my possible faulty power supply. I suppose the best I can do is test my gpu in a friend's system and try to determine if it is the cause or not.

Hey, reading online, I came across a thread where the person had the same problem as me. They said they solved the problem by changing the sata plugs where the hard drives were plugged. And desperate enough for a solution, I unplugged my hard drives not really expecting anything, and yea nothing happened at first. But the next day I tried turning on the system and it booted to bios!! I plugged in the hard drives and it booted to windows! Now I do not know what solved the problem, the pc siting idle for a day or disconnecting the sata plugs. I do not even know if this is a permanent solution but if anyone is experiencing a problem similar to this, maybe doing what I did would help you (I doubt it, it looks like a fluke but maybe it'll work for you as well.) Also thanks hang-the-9 for your guidance.

It was too good to be true, they same thigh I described above happened again last night and now the monitor is not receiving a signal. Also does not seem like a drive problem, when they monitor does seem to get a signal, the drive boots up just fine.

Tanks for the fast reply, i have tried the moniter with another device and it works, unfortunately i use a dvi to connect my pc to the moniter and i have no other pc to test the dvi cable on. Same thing for the gpu, it's a fat power hungry gpu and i have no other pc that can house it, i will try to convince a friend to let me use their PC to test the gpu. I will let you know if i make any progress.

I tested another system on the moniter with a vga cable, it worked: this rules out the monitor as the problem

I tested my pc on a tv with hdmi, the same problem occurs: this pretty much rules out the dvi cable as the problem (tho I suppose there is a slight chance it is not functioning as i have not tested it)

This leads me to conclude that the problem is almost guaranteed to be inside the pc. And yes it seems tge gpu is the most likely culprit but whats weird is that the motherboard posts normally. I do not get a beep code telling that the motherboard senses anything wrong with the gpu or anything else.

Hey, school is over and I finally had time to tinker around the PC. I went to a local computer shop and bought a used gpu for $10. I plug that in and the pc boots and behaves properly. This pretty much concluded that my 7970 was the problem so I ordered a gtx 1060 and when it arrived, i plugged it in and everything is working. I have stress tested it and can game and work on it at extended periods of time flawlessly.

Thanks everyone in the thread that was willing to help me and if anyone is facing a problem similar to mine, I would suggest trying to isolate if the gpu is the problem by plugging in a new gpu to your pc or testing that gpu in another pc.

You were right it was a gpu problem, the psu was fine. A new gpu fixed the problem.
