Hello, I want to make a usb flash drive act like a normal hard drive (bootable of course) and be able to run windows without needing a real hard drive... is this possible? If so how would I set it up?

Solution
Gandalf's:

May or may not be what you are wanting. It is portable...

Many USB flash drives have poor write endurance - they are mainly designed for moving a large amount of data, not being frequently written to as running an OS does. Running an OS directly off of one might not be a good idea if you need this to work properly long-term.

Is it just a list of programs? I am not sure if there is something specific you want me to see.

At the moment I don't need it for the long term, just for testing purposes and curiosity.

Why Windows, and why does it need to be bootable USB?

You can do this easily with Linux, if you just need an OS to boot from.

like I said, its just for testing purposes and because I would like to challenge myself to see if I can actually do it... (with the help of you guys of course, I really appreciate your assistance!)

The list of programs are what is preconfigured in the ISO you'd DL and write to the flash drive. I carry one with me because it bots on the new computers EUFI Bios and the older machines as well.

If you have only older BIOS based systems, use Hiren's, it is a WindowsXP base and has lots of preconfigured tools as well.

Just use ubuntu. To be honest, i've just about abandoned all other recovery disks. While I don't use ubuntu for my main distro, it is damn handy for rescue. Propietary or not, it has matured well past many rescue disks.

BTW, corroded answered your question with proof.

Alright, I've started to download Gandalf's redstone build... after that I can just burn it to a flash drive and plug it in... then set the boot sequence to boot the flash drive first and it will boot like i've already installed it? no other procedures that make me install it to a hard drive?
