Long story short, after Christmas my friend was given a used i3-6100 from another one of my buddies, put it in the motherboard he just purchased and it worked! He didn't have a graphics card yet, and was planning on purchasing.

The very next day, he found is PC would not post but would power on. He noticed the red CPU light and checked out the socket and CPU. He noticed that the socket had bent pins and he sent it back and got a new one free. He put his CPU back in, just to find another red light. Just to make sure it was the CPU again and not a motherboard, I tested it out in my PC and we still got a red CPU light. Could bent pins on a MOBO kill a CPU? Any recommendations on something to try?

Bent pins on the board could have bent pins on the CPU or connected two pins that should not have been connected and shorted it out. You might be able to get it refurbished if you like, but don't try yourself, you'll just make it worse. You probably need to get a new CPU.

How would I do this?

New intel CPUs do not have pins, you can look on the underside of the CPU and see if there is physical damage but there is really nothing you can do. Bent pins in a mobo can definitely kill a CPU unfortunately.

Hi, out of interest if an lga 1151 asrock gaming k6+ fatality had bent pins would it kill an i7 6700k 9 times out of 10 or nowadays is the motherboard frying the cpu an old wives tale?

Cheers!
