Hi

A friend of mine ordered parts to build his first own computer. I went to his place to help him assembling and setting up everything. But the PC didn't boot. We got everything plugged in properly and correctly and the fans were spinning but it didn't boot at all, not even to the BIOS. We tried all video outputs and followed a list of things to check but nothing helped.

He got an i5 7600k and the Asus Z170M Plus. Asus supports 7th gen CPUs on their Z170 Mainboards but you need an updated Bios (V.2002) and his Mainboard currently has V.0.504.

The guy in the shop said we couldn't change the MB with another one and could just flash-update (USB) it without a CPU in. But it didn't even boot into the bios before ... is this possible? If there is no CPU in the socket? I heard certain boards support this feature, how can I find out which ones?

How to do this without a cpu. Order a bios chip with the version that works for your cpu.

I've done this a couple times before with an old motherboard.

On your board there is a small chip down in the bottom right corner near the sata ports. That is your bios chip.

Below is a link to a person who is selling them online. Usually what you do is you buy it and in the notes give the version you want your chip to be. Yes it sucks that you have to go about it this way, but unless you have a 6th gen intel sitting around somewhere or know someone who does have one, this is your easiest way to get it up and running.
