Lithium-ion batteries are very temperamental, and have a tendency to catch fire or explode if overcharged, or if over-discharged, then recharged.
Given the age of the device, if it emptied the battery and you let it sit for a while (days, weeks, months) before recharging it, you may have triggered the latter state and the charge-protection circuitry has killed the battery to protect you from a fire. Li-ion batteries will slowly self-discharge when unused, and this self-discharge on an empty battery can drop it to a level that the charging circuitry considers to be over-discharged.
Never allow a device to sit after being completely discharged. Recharge it immediately, even if it's only to 10%. (Ideal long-term storage charge...
