Hi all,

Apologies, this is my first post.

My son's pc started receiving "S.M.A.R.T Status Bad, Backup, and Replace". After looking at general feedback on on www, I decided to buy two straight replacement HDD (1 x SSD - Samsung 750 EVO 500 GB 2.5 inch Solid State Drive & 1 x SATA - Seagate Desktop 3.5 inch 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB 6GB/S Internal SATA Drive HDD).

I did this rather than checking the HDD's, as I just wanted to make sure all my son's Uni work was safe.

I installed both drives and booted the PC, but got the same "Bad S.M.A.R.T Status" again.

I tried disconnecting the secondary SATA HDD, and booted to find the S.M.A.R.T error had gone.

Is it likely that I now need to replace the HDD cable. If so, what cable/s do I need to be ordering?

Many thanks all in advance.

A grateful newbie.

Hi there adamsandr,

As there could be something wrong with the drive, it would be a nice idea to back up the data stored on it until you sort this out.
Once you do that, you can just test the drive with some of these: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility

You can take a screenshot of the SMART data, upload it to an image hosting website and post the link over here.

If the HDD is in a good shape, then you can attach the drive with different SATA and power cables to a different SATA port.
Well, I believe you will just need to get another SATA cable.

Cheers,

Cheers D_Know_WD...... the HDD's were fine. Turned out it was a bad SATA data cable. Thanks again
