Loose SATA Cable cause freeze?

So recently I accidentally hit my desk and the vibration caused my computer to freeze. Screen was frozen, mouse did not respond, keyboard did not respond (ctrl+alt+del didn't work). The fans kept on spinning and I noticed that the hard disk activity light on the front did not light up anymore. Now it freezes again with a bit too much vibration.

I suspect it's a loose SATA cable from my HDD. It seemed to be a bit loose. I disconnected my HDD, but the SATA cable was still connected to my motherboard, just not my HDD anymore. I tested again by vibrating my desk slightly (I know it's stupid, but I can't test it any other way) and it froze again. Can a loose SATA cable that is not connected to the HDD anymore, but only to the MB cause a freeze? And can a loose HDD SATA cable cause damage to my system besides data corruption on my HDD?

Specs:
i7-5820 3.3GHz
GeForce GTX 970
ASUS X-99A motherboard
4x Kingston HyperX DDR4 4GB
OCZ700MXSP (700W) PSU
Mugen 2 cooler block
Samsung 256GB SSD
1x Seagate HDD 1TB

Solution
Since you've disconnected the HDD and it still freezes, have you checked your other connections like the SSD?

A loose connection can cause signal integrity errors which can cause a drive to freeze. That shouldn't cause any permanent damage.

A loose connection could also cause short circuiting which can also cause things to freeze up. This can potentially cause permanent damage.
