While trying to upgrade my CPU from an i5 2500k to an i7 3770k, I needed to update the BIOS on my ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 motherboard. After doing so, my PC won't boot and keeps telling me to select an appropriate boot device.

I have 2 SSDS, one is 250GB (Windows 10 installed) and the other is 500GB. The 250GB is in the first SATA port.

Initially when I tried to boot after the update, my UEFI settings were reset (expected) and I tried to change my boot order. The boot ssd wasn't recognized so I unplugged everything except for it and got it to show in the boot order.

Then I changed my storage boot options from IDE to AHCI and the sucker still won't boot.

What's going on?

Solution
Link between efi and Windows boot was broken by the Uefi update.

After fiddling with some settings I locked myself out of the uefi on accident.

I cleared my CMOS and used a Windows 10 recovery USB to repair the boot.

Got a little further but couldn't fully boot, sor I booted into safe mode and was able to get to the desktop.

Restarted and was able to fully boot windows 10 and desktop seems to be functioning appropriately.

Along with boot order, also check to see which SSD is selected as the 1st drive. The system may be trying to boot off the wrong SSD.
And as you found out, updating the BIOS always resets the BIOS to the default settings. So check to see if anything else needs to be changed back the way you had it before the update.

Yeah it was probably the strangest loop I've come across so far.

Not even totally sure why booting in safe mode allowed me to fully boot. I can only guess that safe mode basically brute forced it's way in, and then the full boot just followed the same path created.

Everything still seems to be running fine, so I'm not gonna question it too much.
