i have an i7 870, 8gb ram, gtx 960 2gb, and a 600w power supply. sometimes when i use my pc the monitor loses signal and the pc restarts. there has also been a decrease in performance in games like battlefield 4 whic stutters constantly now. is my power supply failing?

I would try downloading some diagnosis software prior to calling the PSU a loss. Go ahead and get yourself a copy of MSI Afterburner and run a benchmark or two in a favorite game of your choosing. Pay close attention to usage, the clock speeds and, most importantly the temperature. For your CPU, go ahead and either grab Speedfan or CPUz (my personal favorite). Have that running along side task manager as well to ensure your clock speeds, temp and usage remain consistent through the same tests.

What are your specific hardware models?

Performance decrease you mention doesn't sound like PSU issue, rather a temperature problem. CoreTemp, cpu-z and gpu-z are your friends with diagnostics (or other tools providing same functionality).

And... check the fans are spinning.

the gpu is the original reference design, i will have to check the psu and other stuff. i will get back to you latter tomorrow with the benchmark results tomorrow. earlier i used the afterburner overlay when playing bf4, the cpu and gpu usage were all over the place. they were jumping from 0 to 100 to 30 to 80 all in a few seconds so im not really sure whats going on there.

Haha yes the fans are most definitely spinning. I agree it probable is the cpu overheating. it is a mini itx build and it only has the stock cooler. I live in Australia and its the middle of the summer with no air con so it does get a tad bit hot in my room so i will check out cpu z tomorrow.
